Natural History Competition
The title
for this competition brought an abundance of colour, form and
subject matter. Our Judge for the evening was David Mendus, who
had been drafted in due to the indisposition of Tony Charters.
David seemed astounded
at the amount of pictures to be judged. He expressed his surprise
at such high quality work; a couple of his comments being, "11
out of 10, for some, and added, "all are winners."
He was very generous with his marks, most scored between Eight
and Nine, even though, as all Judges warn us, he would be, "more
critical with the Advanced section."
Among the pictures
we saw were, Lichen - wonderful rich colours of mustard/grey/sage/charcoal
and cinnamon; Birds of various breeds including a Red
Kite in flight, Flamingos - resembling the Red Arrows on display
-, a flying Albatross and two birds that even had fish in their
beaks - were these contrived, David wondered? Also a lovely scene
of two Ducklings entitled "I'm not an Ugly Duckling"
which they certainly were not. A black and grey Heron was beautifully
camouflaged against trees of the birch family.
.
A Squirrel had joined a man sitting on a park bench. Then
there were Flowers, including a beautiful Helleborus and
an Iris, giving the eye an impression of a watercolour painting.
Insects included a Grasshopper on red foliage and a Stag
Beetle. We also saw Fungi including spotted toadstools
and a puffball resembling a meringue.
A most enjoyable
and memorable evening.
