Recommended Books
'Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers' by Martin Evening.
ISBN - 13: 978-0-240-52028-5.

This book covers all aspects of CS3 (most of it relates to CS2 also) and has a good coverage of all the functions applicable to photography.
There is a useful DVD with video tutorials and examples of the methods used, including a very good one on the new Camera RAW plug in.

'Real World Image Sharpening with Adobe Photoshop CS2' by Bruce Fraser.
ISBN 0-321-44991-6.

This book is devoted entirely to the process of image sharpening. It explains in great detail why we need to sharpen images as well as how the process works.
There are explanations of the different methods suggested for different types of input, such as scanned negatives and digital camera images.

Also covered are techniques for sharpening for image content, a soft flower needs a different approach to, say, an Architectural image with hard edges.

Finally it discusses sharpening for the output device, inkjet or offset printing. The use of image masks, using 'find edges' and highpass filters are discussed in detail.

These techniques can be recorded as 'actions' with inserted pauses to allow the unsharp mask setting to be varied depending on the image.
