We were saddened
by the sudden loss of our chairman, David Hampson, and our thoughts
are with Shirley and her family.
Members will be
sorry to hear that David Hampson, our Chairman has died suddenly,
at the end of a holiday with his family in The Gower, Wales.
I understand that he was loading the family car, preparatory
to return, when he collapsed without prior indication of any
problem.
David joined the
Club in our first year, 1980, and served on the committee in
one role or another for much of the past 27 years. He was vice-chairman
quite early on, but may be remembered most particularly for service
as Treasurer, at which he was particularly skilled, and he held
that post more than once. Latterly, of course, he has been our
Chairman, at which task he has been possibly the most efficient,
conscientious and hard-working of any of those who have taken
it on. Recently, his computer skills made him a 'natural' for
operating the Club's digital projector when (partly through his
efforts) we acquired it with help from a grant from Waverley
Borough.
On a personal level,
his consistent good humour and schoolboyish enthusiasm have ensured
his popularity. We shall remember him with fondness and profound
regret at his premature departure from us.
