New GPC website launched

Over the past few months, we’ve been re-designing our website to make it easier for members and non-members to find information.

Here are some of the improvements we’ve made:

Introducing updates

Godalming Photographic Club regularly participates in regional and national competitions having achieved a number of successful results in recent years. Up to now, we’ve relied on Facebook to make these announcements without posting more widely on our website. Our members also regularly achieve distinctions or accolades which we’re very proud of. A news section has been added to make room for all the updates we’ve wanted to share for some time.

Clean and simple design

We’ve changed the design of our pages to focus on the most important part of the site; our images. We’re hoping a brighter, more spacious design will bring the best out of the images we share from our members.

To make things easier to use, we’ve chosen to provide a clear and persistent navigation and reduce any technical or member-only information. We hope this should keep the site focused on our events and galleries.

Mobile friendly

One of the most important features of our site is that it responds to different device widths. We’ve tried to make it easier to view content on a range of devices so prospective and current members can digest information more easily on-the-move (or on the sofa!)

Easier to update

One of our re-design goals was to make the site easier to update. To do this, we’ve chosen a platform which allows us to create and update content more quickly which we hope will make the site more interesting for our regular visitors.

Although I liked the style of the previous website, I agree this has moved us on in look and functionality and imagine took a lot of work. Minor point, but it feels that you should be able to click on an upcoming event on the rhs and click through to the details as for recent news?

Thanks for your comments Claire. Yes, I agree with you and glad we share the same view. I was having a few issues with the individual events pages before we went live so had to remove the links to them, but hopefully we’ll be able to add this functionality back in shortly.

Apologies, one other point – the vertical bar in th logo could do with being thicker or in a different colour – it looks like our name is GIPC!

Thanks Claire. I’ve tried to avoid changing the logo too much as part of the website redesign, partly to stay focused on delivering the site and also to keep a bit of continuity with the old site. As we are using this GPC logo with the ‘pipe’ symbol, we’ll need to make sure we know where else to replace it if we do any new concepts for a logo, which is hopefully a job for the future. For now, I’ve added an icon next to the logo just to give the area a bit of interest. Hopefully it makes it feel a little more like a logo by adding a graphical element. You’ll be interested to hear, that I spoke to Laurie at the welcome back evening earlier this week and he shared your view about the current logo too. We talked about looking at ideas for a new logo sometime in the future.
